Program Areas
Arts
While the Foundation will support arts institutions and programs, its main interest in the arts program sector is in generating, developing and maintaining audiences for the arts. Primary grant areas include:
- Youth education programs. These include Fine Arts, Theatre, Music, Speech and Literacy. Particular credit is given to innovative and cost effective programs for children and teens.
- Artistic Literacy. Programs in this area focus on generating a greater understanding of and appreciation for the Arts in society at large, and defending the enriching and civilizing value of widespread arts education for children and teens. This includes public education programs, audience development efforts, and programs which overlap with the youth education programs referenced above.
Science and the Environment
While not directly supporting scientific research, the Foundation strongly supports efforts to promote scientific understanding in American society. Grant areas include:
- Scientific Literacy: This area consists of programs which bring the general public a greater understanding of the wonder and value of science and the Scientific Method. These efforts work to convey the inspirational power of scientific discovery, as well as to delineate the difference between truth as defined by scientific means and simple opinion or belief.
- Youth education programs. Extra-curricular and intra-curricular programs for children and teens, including cross-disciplinary programs, mentorship and other innovative programming.
- Environmental Issues. These programs serve to create and promote awareness of the fragility of the natural environment, and the need to conceive and construct sustainable means of development, including energy generation, transportation and food production.
- Space. This supports educational efforts which promote the peaceful development and exploration of outer space, and effectively communicate the widespread inspirational effect of the space program on science education and the public at large.
